Pinoytown

Hidden within San Jose’s Japantown, a vibrant Filipino community flourished from the 1930s through the 1950s — lovingly known as Pinoytown. Families who had worked in the fields and orchards settled here, transforming the neighborhood into a self-sustaining enclave of homes, shops, and community life.

Thanks to FANHS‑SCV and community storyteller Manong Robert Ragsac, those decades are being revived through their special Pinoytown Historical Walking Tours — part of Filipino American History Month. These walking tours, and a virtual version too, bring to life the stories of Filipino families who made their mark in San Jose — keeping their legacy alive today.

Pinoytown wasn’t just a place to live; it was a cluster of Filipino-run businesses, social ties, and cultural celebrations — a genuine hometown built from the ground up.
