When California became a state in 1850, it needed a capital — and the honor went to none other than San Jose.

Chosen for its central location and growing prominence, San Jose became California’s first state capital, hosting the inaugural state legislature in a modest two-story adobe building downtown. The city was still muddy, rough, and rural — lawmakers reportedly complained about the cold, leaky buildings and limited lodging — but history was in the making.

Though the capital soon moved (first to Vallejo, then Sacramento), San Jose holds the unique distinction of being where California’s political foundation was laid. Here, laws were written, systems were formed, and the Golden State’s story officially began.

Today, traces of that legacy remain in the city’s civic pride, innovation, and leadership. Because long before tech made it famous, San Jose was where California became California.

A Replica at The Fair

Tucked inside the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds once stood something unexpected and grand: a full-scale replica of the California State Capitol Building — a striking reminder that San Jose was once the state’s first capital.

Built in 1949 by hundreds of volunteers, this ambitious replica was the centerpiece of the Santa Clara County Fair, meant to educate the public and inspire civic pride. Modeled in exacting detail after the original Capitol, it created the foundation for History San Jose.
